CLEVELAND — Cavaliers guard Iman Shumpert injured his left foot in Wednesday’s 109-93 preseason loss to the Atlanta Hawks and will undergo medical imaging Thursday to determine the severity of the injury.

“We won’t know until tomorrow morning, but I think he should be OK,” Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said after the game.

Shumpert suffered the injury while landing awkwardly after a missed dunk attempt with 2:16 remaining in the first quarter. He limped back to the locker room after a timeout and did not return to the game.

Cavs’ Shumpert talks with Lue about role
Iman Shumpert said he had a talk with Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue to clear the air after his role was reduced and he was mentioned in trade rumors.
The seven-year veteran has been sharing the backcourt in the second unit with Dwyane Wade through the first week of Cavs training camp, trying to carve out a consistent role on a Cleveland team that added guards Wade, Derrick Rose, Isaiah Thomas and Jose Calderon in the offseason.

Earlier in the week, Shumpert shared that he and Lue had an air-it-out meeting prior to the Cavs’ minicamp in Santa Barbara, California, last month to discuss his place on the team after he was included in trade talks over the summer.

Shumpert’s injury could complicate what already figures to be a challenging roster shuffle for Cleveland general manager Koby Altman.

The Cavs have 16 players signed to guaranteed contracts for 2017-18 and can carry only 15 players on their roster, meaning they will either have to cut or trade a player or players before the regular season opens on Oct. 17 against the Boston Celtics.

“It’s a tough process if you can move guys or if you have to let one go,” said Lue. “It’s going to be a tough decision. Just trying to see who plays the best for us, who stays healthy, and we’ve got to go from there.”

Inside the weeks of dysfunction surrounding Kyrie’s trade demand
Kyrie Irving expressed a willingness to return to the NBA Finals with LeBron James just two months ago. Paul George was nearly a Cavalier. Now, Irving’s trade demand has thrown Cleveland for yet another loop this offseason.
Cleveland not only allows Rose to contend for a championship, but it furthermore provides Rose the opportunity to play near his hometown of Chicago.

Additionally, in the wake of the news that Kyrie Irving wants out of Cleveland, a starting point guard spot could be up for grabs. Provided Irving secures his request, Rose’s partnering up with LeBron James could keep the Cavaliers afloat as a contender.

Rose has communicated with James through the process that led him to the Cavaliers, league sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

On Monday night, James took to Twitter to welcome his new teammate.

Rose, 28, met with the Los Angeles Lakers for nearly three hours on Thursday, sources said.

The Lakers tried to entice Rose to sign with them, suggesting they can offer more playing time and money in a better environment after his tumultuous 2016-17 season with the New York Knicks.

The Lakers believed that Rose, who had been working out at L.A.’s practice facility lately, could help the development of their rookie point guard Lonzo Ball, the No. 2 pick in the NBA draft.

Rose averaged 18 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists on 47.1 percent shooting — his best percentage since the 2009-10 season — in 64 games for the Knicks last season.

Rose also met with Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers.
